Can motorsport ever be eco-friendly?
They have adapted two Honda Hybrid cars (vehicles that combine electric and petrol power, and are thus more environmentally friendly) for use in the competitive world of rally driving. This is the first time hybrid cars have been used in a rally competition, and these vehicles – while admittedly not being the most streamlined or snazzy of rides – are optimised to compete with conventional rally cars. In doing so, they output exceptionally low emissions of CO2 and toxins, and give a level of fuel efficiency never seen before in the sport. All of which means that if you care to don one of the white helmets that Andrews and Meeson wear to career around Millbrook's many twists and turns, it is hard initially to notice the difference between their vehicle and a normal rally car.
The Great Fire of 16.66 miles
I have a small electronic milometer on my bicycle which, among other fascinating statistics (maximum speed, average speed, current speed), records the distance covered to two decimal places. Thus ten and two thirds of a mile shows up as 10.66, just shy of 16 and a half miles is 16.49, and so on. It will be seen immediately that although those figures represent mileage, they can also be read as dates, very famous dates in the case of the two examples. Using this insight, I have developed a game combining my twin interests of cycling and general knowledge. The game is to think, as you pedal along, of something significant that happened on that date in the moment that your milometer registers it. Beautiful in its simplicity, no? You haven't got long. One one-hundredth of a mile is 17.6 yards, or not much over 50 feet.
Unit 5 vote revisits District 87 merger talk
In recent months, at multiple informational meetings about Unit 5's $96.7 million construction referendum, at least one person has asked a question related to merging with Bloomington's District 87.Would a merger save money by requiring less staff? Would it help with Unit 5's overcrowding? Would it improve educational opportunities for students?District 87 Superintendent Bob Nielsen said before anybody can definitively answer those questions — or argue for or against merger — a thorough and fair study of benefits and costs is needed.“All facts should be known" because a merger would have so many implications for both districts — and the community as a whole, Nielsen said.“We'd need to do a fairly large study to see if there are any (cost) savings," Unit 5 Superintendent Gary Niehaus agreed. The only time voters in both districts cast ballots on a merger was in 1996.
Long-distance loss
A LeBron James' layup that seemed to go all the way into the basket and come out and a finesse floater that Shawn Marion made with 1.1 seconds to go that gave the Phoenix Suns a 110-108 victory over the Cavaliers. It was a sour end to the Cavs' five-game winning streak and their six-game home winning streak. For James, the miss was a blemish on another great game — 36 points and seven rebounds. For Marion, it was his only basket of what previously had been a forgettable evening. In reality, those were merely the final details, not the crux of the evening. On the cusp of another high-quality win in their run of solid play since Christmas, the Cavs (23-19) rested on their laurels in the second half, and it caught up with them against a marquee opponent like the Suns (31-13).
