Michael Bauer: Between Meals
When Ed Levine interviewed me for his book "Pizza: A Slice of Heaven," I listed as one of my favorites the arugula and prosciutto pizza from Firewood Cafe. This decade-old restaurant has three locations in San Francisco: in the Castro, in the food court at the Metreon, and at SFO. I've been to all of them but rarely venture beyond that pizza and one of the salads, which are consistently good. In the Castro, the original location, the feeling is upscale. Large windows overlook 18th Street, and each table is set with a complimentary bowl of olives. Diners line up in front of the wood-fired oven to order, and the food is brought to the table. Size: 10 inches ($8.50-$9.50). Style: Thin crust. Oven: Firewood oven that bakes the pie for 650 degrees for about 5 minutes.
Davis sworn as police chief
Janet Davis was sworn in Jan. 23 as the Clovis Police Department's first female chief. Davis, a 21-year veteran of the department, took the oath of office at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building surrounded by city officials, co-workers and loved ones. She now oversees a department of 115 sworn officers, who respond to more than 30,000 calls for service a year, and an annual budget of $23.4 million. "Twenty-one years ago, I couldn't believe it when Chief Jerry Galvan asked me to be part of the police department," Davis said. "Standing here now, what a tremendous honor to represent the finest group of men and women in law enforcement." Former police chiefs Galvan, Joe Maskovich and Jim Zulim watched Davis be sworn in. Davis' mother, Edna Sacks, pinned the chief's badge on her uniform.

Google needs more bandwidth to handle traffic between Asia and the U.S. Here's what you need to know: Google is getting into the infrastructure game in an arrangement that gives it direct access to the cable (most companies get bandwidth via telecom providers); Google is building its own network despite repeated denials.

Don't root for the bad guy, because although he may have several spacious New York City apartments, a closet full of natty suits, and a beauty-queen wife (and treat his momma right), he's still a cold-blooded killer. Ridley Scott's American Gangster based on a New York magazine article profiling Frank Lucas, a real-life drug kingpin in 1960s and '70s Harlem makes sure we understand that Lucas (Denzel Washington) is responsible for unleashing deadly, near-pure heroin (imported directly from Southeast Asian sources at the height of the Vietnam War) onto American streets. Paralleling Lucas's rise to power, with far less glamour, is the story of cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), who's also a lawyer (thanks to night school) and a man of unimpeachable character to his detriment, as it turns out, since every other officer on the force is totally dirty and won't work with him.

A LEED-certified building designed to minimize its environmental impact need cost no more than about 3 percent than more than other buildings, building experts said. What is undeniable is that green homes cost less in following years, because of generally improved energy efficiency. Important in designing a green home, experts told the magazine, is for the architects, builders and developers to hold meetings at the outset, as the most important aspects of green building must be incorporated into building design. Gunnison unsure it wants thin-air testing GUNNISON At 8,000 feet, the Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport is attractive to aeronautical companies wanting to test aircraft in thinner air. The valley is broad and the air is mostly calm. Boeing has tested there in the past, and last summer QuinetiQ, a London-based defense contractor, tested a new rendition of its Sea King helicopter.
