Two perish in plane crash in Moshi

At least two people died and four others were seriously injured when a small plane, a Cessna with registration number 172 5H-FUN, crashed in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region, yesterday.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Lucas Ng`hoboko told PST yesterday that the plane crashed at around 2.40 p.m at the industrial area in Moshi municipality after its engine failed, causing it to lose direction.

``The pilot found out that the plane had some technical faults and decided to fly it to the Kilimanjaro International Airport. However, it crashed before it could land at the airport,`` said the RPC.

According to eyewitnesses, the pilot, Baraka Rutwaza (36), died on the spot.

Those injured and whose condition are said to be critical were identified as Hyden Rowan (26) from New Zealand, Isack Johanes (28) from South Africa and a sky guide master of the plane, Sylan Borton.

Gearing down with single-speed mountain bikes

A growing number of mountain-bike enthusiasts are shifting back to the basics and choosing single-speed machines.

While advancements in mountain-bike technology have seemed to bring more climbing capability with each model year, some aficionados have realized there can be too much of a good thing.

Fans of the new generation of one-speed mountain bikes rave about their dependability, quiet ride and sense of cycling purity.

"There was a moment in the mountain bike world when it had, like, a rebirth," says Gary Fisher, who gave the mountain bike its name nearly 30 years ago. "It's purist. It's practical. The bikes are light because they don't have all that other stuff on there."

While the latest machines are reminiscent of their ancestors, they have many improvements.

Is Your Child’s Car Seat a Death Trap?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission keeps a list of recalls online, so you can check to find out if the car seat your child uses, or the one you plan to buy, is known to be defective. Some recalls simply involve replacing a defective part, while others mean replacing the entire unit.

Common car seat defects and failures include:
• Buckle failure
• Harness failure
• Shoulder straps which come loose or unclip during an accident
• Area where the seat belt attaches to the car seat breaks or bends, allowing the seat to launch
• Separation of seat from base, allowing the seat to launch
• Inadequate support allows child to slip down in car seat during accident
• Poor shell design
• Padding inadequate to provide protection from injury

Installation
More than 80% of car seats are improperly installed because the instruction manuals are too complicated or unclear.

Patrick Reusse: And returning to the lineup, an oft-wounded QB

There are a couple of things to make clear here, in regards to what Vikings coach Brad Childress had to say about quarterback Tarvaris Jackson during his Monday media session.

First, Childress did not say Jackson was a China doll. He merely raised it as a possibility.

Second, this was a reference to the historic fragility of China dolls, and not to that country's ongoing efforts to poison the youth of America with imported toys.

Jackson will return to the lineup Sunday against Oakland. That means he has recovered from a concussion, Jackson's fourth injury in 1½ seasons with the Purple.

Jackson suffered this latest injury Nov. 4 against San Diego.

Childress was asked this question Monday: "How much do you factor in that he may be injury-prone when you make a decision if he's your guy?"

The coach formulated his answer for a moment, then said: "You ask yourself, 'Is this just one particularly bad year? Is it the fact he is a China doll?' Somewhere you have to have some durability and resilience."

Jackson injured a knee in practice before ever playing a game as a rookie in 2006.

India's youths are in perilous grip of a smoking epidemic

My skin is even gross, my lips are black because of it," sighed Ahuja, her ashtray filled with cigarette butts. Her friends, a pilot and a writer, took long drags on their cigarettes, exhaled puffs of smoke and agreed that it's just not easy to stop smoking.

Young Indians, especially women like Ahuja, represent one of the largest markets for cigarette companies. They also face a high risk for smoking-related deaths, according to health officials.

Recent findings from the first nationally representative study of smoking in India found that this country is in the grips of a smoking epidemic likely to cause nearly a million deaths a year starting in 2010. There are 120 million smokers in India, half of them younger than 30, the study found. India has a larger population of smokers than any other country in the world except for China.

Monday wild card

As you are all aware, a local newspaper printed an editorial that criticized our City for requiring Ironman USA to reimburse our City for services provided during the bike race through Post Falls. I wanted to give you some information on what some of the other Cities that host Ironman events require. Please do not think that I am picking a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. I would like to give you information about Ironman events in other areas and cities."
