UN SECRETARY-GENERAL RENEWS CALL TO CONFERENCE ON DISARMAMENT TO ADOPT ...

Those talks would advance nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation objectives – and they were needed now. In making that call, he was not at all discounting the importance of preventing an arms race in outer space, or negative security assurances, or nuclear disarmament per se. However, the Conference had to decide how to organize its treatment of those issues without holding any of them hostage to the others.

In brief opening remarks, Ambassador Samir Labidi of Tunisia, President of the Conference, underscored that the Secretary-General's presence at the opening of the Conference's session added a new dimension to their efforts aimed at achieving substantive results in the Conference this year.

The plenary of the Conference was also addressed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Tunisia, as well as general statements from the Russian Federation, on behalf of the Eastern European Group, Sri Lanka, on behalf of the Group of 21, Italy on behalf of the Western Group, and China.

What Happened Locally in 2007?

This annual walk for Alzheimers raised $25,314 and had 110 registered walkers for the event, including Anne Gallop, who walked in memory of her mother who also walked in this event until she passed away in 2002 from the illness. Every dollar raised went to family support groups, in-office counseling or to making pamphlets.

31- Quinte, Centennial and Moira Secondary Schools each received some exciting post-Christmas gifts. The YMCA decided to donate its used treadmills that are still in good condition to these high schools to promote good fitness habits among youth.

Track World Cup 06-07 Round 1 - CDM

Asked whether he was worried about Queally's 1.02.362, set on a bunch bike with no tri-bars, Hoy replied, "I don't really think about the times when I'm up there, but that was a really impressive ride from Jason considering he's been on a similar program to me".

Hoy will now focus on the team sprint but also mentioned a proposed trip to Bolivia for an attempt on Arnaud Tournant's world kilo record of 58.875, due to take place after next year's world track championships. "I wouldn't be going out there if I didn't think I could break the record. It's an amazing record but the track is virtually on the moon, so that makes a huge difference," he said.

Tim Veldt of the Netherlands, riding in the same heat as Hoy, took the bronze medal in 1.03.314 while home favourite Joel Leonard finished sixth after riding a fast opening lap but fading in the closing stages.

Secret files against terror suspects revealed

In a proper trial, the public hears (or can obtain transcripts to) both the arguments of the Defence and the Prosecution. There are almost always arguments going both ways.

Here, the media only hears (and therefore reports) the side of the prosecution, along with all of the most extreme of accusations against the 'defendants'. Then again, can you even call them defendants in such a twisted system of justice where it's guilty until proven innocent, and where 'secret hearings' replace courtrooms? Japan household shift from safe deposits a slow one

Households with more than two persons held an average 12.59 million yen ($117,400) of financial assets in 2007, up from 11.19 million yen the year before, according to the annual survey conducted in October and November.

Deposits accounted for 53 percent of financial assets, down from 54 percent in 2006. Securities holdings -- including stocks, bonds and investment trusts -- rose to 19 percent in 2007 from 16 percent the year before.

Nearly half of respondents, or 46.5 percent, cited safety as the top priority in choosing financial assets. Liquidity and profitability were cited by 28 percent and 16.5 percent, respectively.

In the past few years Japanese investors have turned to foreign assets like New Zealand bonds and Chinese stocks, trying to earn better returns than they can get at home where interest rates are very low and the equity market has underperformed others.
